A Preliminary Study to Establish Focusing-Oriented Art Therapy in Korea - An Analysis of Training Course Participants' Experience -

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to analyze the experiences of participants who attended Focusing-Oriented Art Therapy (FOAT) offered by Focusing & Expressive Arts Institute, U.S.A. Using Giorgi's phenomenological research method, the researchers identified 4 categories and 18 themes. The phenomenological method provides the structure of general experiences based on research participants' individual experience and meaning. The first category was expectation on FOAT and the themes were: 1) ambiguous feeling and curiosity, 2) withering and concern. The second category was named as FOAT lived-experiences and themes were: 3) not so demanding, 4) appropriate distance and concentration, 5) ability to know my inner world, 6) repetitive seeking experience, 7)ability to re-exam inner world, 8) connection, 9) changes. The third category was applicability of FOAT and themes were: 10) facilitating therapeutic relationship, 11) ability to help self-expression, 12) facilitating insight, 13) experience of integrity/wholeness, 14) concretization of felt sense. The fourth category was the limitation of FOAT and the themes were: 15) therapist's attitude, 16) environment, 17) examination of therapeutic effectiveness 18) limitation of skills. Based on the results, the researchers hope to provide understanding of Focusing-Oriented Art Therapy and the application of the approach in Korea.
